If you love peaches, you must try this absolutely amazing dessert. This delicious peach cobbler is like a peaches and cream affair with a lovely hint of cinnamon baked over a buttery cake. It will make your mouth water just thinking about it.
Although cobblers are usually fruit baked with a biscuit or cake on top, this dessert has the cake on the bottom. It is actually a German dessert known as Peach Kuchen (kuchen is German for cake). As German immigrants settled in other parts of the world, they took this recipe with them and it was readily adopted. In Chile, you will find kuchen in every bakery and grocery store; South Dakota adopted it as their State dessert.
This is so easy to make and so delicious that you may want to double the recipe. If you’re lucky enough to have any left, it tastes even better on the second day. It will never last a third!
Peach Cobbler Recipe (Peach Kuchen)
Ingredients for Peach Cobbler:
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup sugar, plus 2 tablespoons
- ½ tsp. baking powder
- ¼ tsp. salt
- ¾ cup butter, softened
- 5 fresh peaches, peeled and sliced
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 cup heavy cream or sour cream
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
Directions for making Peach Cobbler:
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
In a medium-sized bowl, mix the softened butter, flour, baking powder, salt, and 2 tablespoons of sugar together. Pat the mixture into the bottom and halfway up the sides of an ungreased 8×8 square baking pan.
Arrange the peach slices over the pastry, and sprinkle with the cinnamon and 1 cup of sugar. Bake for 12 minutes.
Whisk the egg yolks with the heavy cream or sour cream and pour over the top of the partially baked kuchen. Place it back in the oven for 30 – 40 more minutes or until the top is bubbly. Serve warm or at room temperature. It’s great alone or with ice cream.
