The Carnival Of Madness Tour ripped through Detroit on Friday with a few bands MIA and a whole lot of upset fans. Listed on the tour is Evanescence, Chevelle, Cavo, New Medicine and Halestorm. The official website informed us that New Medicine has dropped off for a few shows, due to singer Jake Scherer having his appendix removed. But there was no official statement as to what happened to Halestorm? Folks were happy to see one band added, which was a pleasant surprise.
There was dozens of fans that complained at the box office, and even made signs that said, “Where is Halestorm?” And the answers we heard were unexplainable. “Oh Halestorm is doing a free show today at the Machine Shop in Flint, but its already sold out.” What? Why did they jump off this show and go play my favorite tiny biker bar 30 minutes away? Rumor has it, a radio station battle with The WRIF, but yet, 89X was the one hosting the show on stage…we may never know. I don’t know why they were not on the bill. The DTE website did remove Halestorm from the lineup that day, but with no explanations. Either way, many fans were pissed off, and there were dozens of them demanding refunds and finding directions to get to the Machine Shop.
Kaleido opened the show at 5:30pm, and most folks knew who this pink haired singer was as soon as she hit the stage. She has been playing around town in small bars for years, known as the Christina Chriss band. Now its a new band with a new name, Kaleido, and they are better than ever. Chriss has some killer pipes and great spunk on stage. Her energy was fun, infectious, and they put on a very enjoyable set.
Cavo played next, and I’ve been wanting to catch them live for a while. They were pretty good and it seemed they loved the photographers, as they gave us some great poses. Both Cavo and Chevelle did autograph signings near the merch tent. It is so cool when bands come out and give a chance for fans to meet them. Both bands are super friendly and thankful, and we love rock stars that are sweet like that!
Next up was Chevelle, and these guys transformed the stage into a Mexican bull fighting arena. Even a huge black bull was present on stage. Chevelle is never disappointing, as they have so many great hits along with a great stage presence. These guys are touring in support of their new album, Hats Off To The Bull. This latest album is now on sale at Amazon.com for only $2.99, for a limited time. These guys performed a full set of songs including their biggest hits and a few new songs.
Late last year, Evanescence released their third self-titled studio album entitled,Evanescence. It debuted No.1 on the Billboard 200 chart and is getting tons of radio play. The band has been constantly touring since the new album dropped, and after the Carnival Of Madness tour, they are off to South America to play a bunch of shows in Brazil. I wanna go!!!
Evanescence hit the stage at 9pm and played an amazing full set of new and old songs. Singer Amy Lee looked beautiful with her long black locks and fluffy tutu. Lee sings her little heart out so effortlessly, and sways across the stage like a gothic ballerina. I love the way she dips forward and leans back, pouring out emotion in lyrical form. This gothic queen also does some intense headbanging, all with a beautiful smile across her face. She was so happy on stage, and really enjoying the Detroit crowd. The lighting on stage was intense and really set the mood for her dark deep music. Lee is a classically trained pianist, and played 2 keyboards and also a Baby Grand black piano on many songs. The most chilling song was the encore, where Lee appeared by spotlight, sitting on the bench of the Baby Grand. Just her and the piano for the intro to “My Immortal”, which gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. Half way through the song, the band plugged in and really blew everyone away at how amazing and talented this gal and this band is.
The current members of the band include Singer Amy Lee, Guitarist Terry Balsamo, Bassist Tim McCord, Drummer Will Hunt, and Guitarist Troy McLawhorn.
After the show, the band invited some friends backstage for a celebration of Eddie’s (the sound guy) Birthday. Amy gathered all the bands and crew outside, and appeared with an ice cream cake full of lit candles. She sang the most beautiful Happy Birthday Song to Eddie. Cake and beers were consumed, and the bands & crew played games of Corn Hole. They are all quite competitive, and it was very entertaining.
