In heat of over 100 degrees, Winterstone Golf Course in Independence, Mo. played host to the Golf Channel Amateur Tour on Sunday. Winterstone is built over an active limestone mine and players can hear the thunder from blasting daily. Winterstone has several raised tee boxes with zoysia grass fairways and bent grass greens. The course can play from 4,976 yards to 6,752 yards at its longest.
Russ Pitts of Wellsville, Kan. defeated Lance Berland from Salina in a play-off for first place in the Palmer Flight. Both players had shot a two over par 74 in regulation play. Matt Heitman from Saint Joseph, Mo. posted a five over 77 for third place.
The Hogan Flight was won by Mark Stacer of Overland Park with a nine over par 81. Timothy Wilcoxon a Lenexa resident came in second with a score of 82. Third place was won by Jim Loehrer from O’Fallon, Mo. with a 15 over par 87.
A score of 82, 10 over par, was posted by Rick Macartney from Overland Park to win first place in the Sarazen Flight. Second place was won by Les Edwards of Manchester, Mo. with a 15 over par 87. At 17 over par Charles Dickerson a Columbia, Mo. resident took third place.
Jacob Dubin from Pleasant Hill, Mo. won first place in the Jones Fight with a score of 81. Three shots back was Stanley Emerson of Topeka, Kan. in second place. Olathe resident Patrick Emerson posted a 14 over par 86 for third place.
The Snead Flight was won by Paul Fromm from West Des Moines, Ia. with a 29 over par 101. Paul Barnett of Stockton, Mo. posted a 32 over par 104 for second place. Third place was won by Darrel Wise of Blue Springs, Mo. with a score of 106.
The Golf Channel Amateur Tour next plays at Falcon Lakes Golf Club in Basehor, Kan. on August 5th.
