Friday morning, many Goonies fans woke up to the sad news that their revered star, Lupe Ontiveros, had passed away. Lupe Ontiveros played the lovable maid, Rosalita, who spoke no English in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 classic movie, The Goonies.
Rosalita was naively taken in by Corey Feldman’s character, Mouth, as he purposely botched up the Spanish translation of her duties. This included a warning not to go up in the attic and of her terrible fate if she did not do a good job. In the end, Rosalita saved the day when she found the jewels that were hidden in Mikey’s marble bag. Mikey was played by then 13 year old, Sean Astin.
When news of “Rosalita’s” death had surfaced last Friday, actor Sean Astin tweeted, “Thank You Lupe Ontiveros for finding the rich stuff in my jacket pocket!!! #GooniesNeverSayDie”
In 2010, CNN interviewed Lupe Ontiveros about her role in The Goonies during the 25th Anniversary of the movie at the Warner Brothers studio lot in Burbank, California. Of this she said “I remember the Goonies. It will always be with me. You know, I’ll tell you where the greatest moment of the Goonies is… when my image appeared in a bubble gum card. Then I knew I was a star!” And she laughed while raising her arm in triumph.
She continued saying: “It’s beautiful because it’s a film that touched the souls of so many generations, now at 25 years later, without really making it intentional. That’s the magic of movie-making, is it not? That sometimes it hits and sometimes it doesn’t. And in this case, you have the magic of Dick Donner and the kids and the whole fantasy. What young man hasn’t thought about putting on a patch and being the pirate and finding the treasure…”
And then you wonder why Goonies fans love her so much? Her jovial spirit and her unforgettable role in that movie will forever be in their hearts.
Other Twitter users have paid their respects to Mrs. Ontiveros. Julian also expressed his sentiment via Twitter: “A great shame. The maid from the #Goonies died. Goonies *never* say die, Lupe!”
And Erika also tweeted: “Rest well Rosalita. #Goonies Lupe Ontiveros”
Facebook users also paid their respects. Jen posted, “RIP Rosalita :(….adios senorita :( :(”
And Omar on Google+ posted: ” ‘Adiós, señorita!’ – Mouth, The Goonies”
She was diagnosed with liver cancer earlier this year and passed away Thursday. Details of the funeral arrangements have not been publicly disclosed. She is survived by her husband, three sons and two grandchildren. “Rosalita” was only 69 years of age. And in true Goonie fashion, fans bid her farewell with “Goonies Never Say Die!”
Descanse en Paz, Mrs. Ontiveros.
