The newest of all fruits to come out of the genetically modified arena are apples. This is the first time in the world we have heard publicly announced genetic altering of apples, a staple in many people’s diets the world over. The apple in one of the more popular fruits, common, versatile, and widely consumed throughout the world. Must we now worry of our apples having the great organ disrupting stain that is “GMO”?
In the past, apples were always safe to eat being free from any bioengineering. It has recently come out that a company by the name of Okanagan Specialty Fruits has created a GMO apple. They are now attempting to push or “slang” their new juicy laboratory creation unto all unsuspecting apple eaters. They are also trying to, in a villainous attempt, hide the facts about these dangerous fruits.
These creations are based in Canada, as well as the Okanagan Specialty Fruits company. This company was also not very forthcoming with information about their apples according to Infowars.com. The specialty of these apples are that they are “non-browning”. Apples naturally grown in nature brown naturally, as is the natural process of things.
Upon releasing them in Canada the company has only provided very little information on the apples. The United States in their next location that they wish to release these laboratory creations.
Okanagan Specialty Foods were obligated to approach the United States Department of Agriculture if they wanted to enter in their creations into local supermarkets within the United States. The request that they have submitted is posted on the USDA’s official website. They are leaving it up to the public to comment on the creations, and weight in with their opinions but the public has virtually no knowledge of this.
The application submitted speaks on the unnatural basis and properties of the apple, also called in laboratory terms “Malus x domestica”. The application states that the apple is a “non-browing phenotype” and says that they inserted a “polyphenol oxidase” or PPO. They admit and acknowledge that it was inserted with a “gene”, which is the obvious genetic modification.
It also says that when these apples are cut and left out, that they are not subject to browning like “non-transformed” apples. This statement makes “regular” apples seem inferior.
What people must understand is that these apples are not natural, and the effects on the body will not be natural either.
Over a third of Canadians are vehemently opposed to these apples in their country. The opposition comes with the omission by this company that in the process of altering one gene within the apple a whole host of changes could take place. This means that they have only started a potentially large chain of events that could take place in the life of the apple as it goes on to be harvested. Changes that are unforeseen, as the research has not been done to determine these changes. Nor has research been done to determine the changes on the body that will take place. They want people to assume that the apple will have the same nutritious effect as regular apples, but they have expressed they are not regular apples.
A whistle blower by the name of Kirk Azevedo has gathered information from expert genetic modifiers at Monsanto that, in the genetic process different proteins are produced. These proteins are new, as they are created as a by product of this genetic modification.
These new and undiscovered proteins are what activists opposed to these actions are worried will hit people off guard, as the very makers of these things have not studied these byproduct proteins and do not know what they will do.
If these proteins are like other genetically modified products they could cause organ disruption or even organ failure.
This uncertainty of these products make them a dangerous and risky gamble for people to consume on a regular basis. Furthermore, with the fight for correct labeling of GMO’s not yet done, will likely cause more people the stay unaware of these dangers if and when they hit the market.
