The Joynt, on the corner at 650 North Dearborn (at Erie) is a Chicago treasure. It covers two floors with four beautiful rooms. There is live music and great food and drinks. It’s more expansive on the inside than it seems it could be based on its street corner entrance.
The Joynt is a hub of arts activity. On the night I visited there were painting and sushi making classes going on in the two separate rooms downstairs. They also have monthly Linkedin meet-ups, burlesque shows, red carpet events and much more.
While the classes were ending, some amazing live music began. First up was Stephen Wright solo on his trumpet. He wasn’t exactly solo, he had an electronic back up band which he jokingly called Mac & Tosh. There was nothing programmed about his performance. It was fresh and alive due to his sublime play. He has wonderful tone and breath control.
Next up was a blues band, the Pete Galanis Band featuring Nate Manos. A blues band so good that old school Chicago blues musicians hang out at the bar to hear them play. They played a mixture of original songs and blues standards. Pete’s a Berklee College of Music guitar performance grad and it is evident in his effortless playing. The band is super tight and they are all pros, simply great players. The drummer, Turbo Darvante played with a cast on his broken forearm, though you wouldn’t know from hearing him play. I can’t imagine how good he is with two good arms! You can catch Pete’s band every Tuesday at Rosa’s.
The Joynt is a magnet for top notch bands, they have delicious food, smooth drinks and a fabulous atmosphere, you should go there tonight! They are open every day 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Saturdays 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Shows are free Sunday to Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays there is a $10 cover.
