The National Writers Union (NWU) NY Local held its 2nd annual Readers and Righters Summer Series on August, 25, 2012 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm, at the Muhlenberg New York Public Library (209 West 23 Street, NY, NY 10011). The event was hosted by New York Chapter Co-Chair, Loretta Campbell with Readers Jo Anne Meekins, Paul Werner and Hugh Samuels.
Loretta Campbell started the program with a brief introduction of herself, the National Writers Union and the first Reader, Jo Anne Meekins. Jo Anne shared four uplifting poems, two from each of her books, “For Such A Time As This” and “On Solid Ground: Inspirational Poetry For All Occasions.”
Next up was Paul Werner, who read from his publications: 1) Ya-Trang and the Magic Pearl: a Viet-Namese Folk Tale. (Published as a benefit during the Viet-Nam war); 2) The Red Museum: Art, economics and the Ends of Capital. (Self-published at The Orange Press); and 3) WOID: a journal of visual language (his online journal).
Our final Reader was new member Hugh Samuels (aka Hugh Anthony) reading from his newest book release, “Write From The Heart.” Hugh shared four poems, one dedicated to his recently deceased mom.
Loretta rounded out the afternoon with a Q & A, asking each Reader to answer what inspires us as writers; how we feel about the new age of e-books; and do we write to sway readers or only to present our information. In the end, Loretta felt that we were much more liberal in our way of thinking than she. All in all, it was a great opportunity for local writers to share creative energy with each other and an audience.
The Reading Series is free and open to the public. New York Chapter short story writers, essayists, poets, novelists, and journalists are invited to showcase their talents on either the July or August date scheduled. Contact the NWU NY Local if you desire to participate in any future Readers and Righters Summer Series events.
