If you are looking for family fun this coming week, there is one sure place to find it, the Maryland State Fair.
I had the immense pleasure of not only attending the fair last night, but was also given the opportunity to meet and talk with members of Christian rock band The Newsboys. The Newsboys and The Afters, another Christian band, performed live last night and put on a truly outstanding show.
It doesn’t matter if you are new to Christian music or a longtime fan, once you hear the music performed by these bands, you will be hooked.
The Newsboys and the Afters may be Christian artists, but they are doing an outstanding job of bridging the gap between Christian and mainstream music. The crowd was captivated last night as these amazing bands rocked the night away.
Songs like In the Hands of God and Light up the Sky speak to each one of us, no matter where we are in our lives. You can’t help but feel like they are singing to you personally.
As parents, it is next to impossible to shelter our children from profanity and inappropriate content. Music is one area however, that we as parents can offer morally sound and age appropriate options. Christian Rock, and Pop Rock bands offer the same sounds that make mainstream music so appealing, but are comprised of lyrics and concepts that are suitable for young and impressionable listeners.
When asked what the band hopes to achieve with their music, Drummer Duncan Phillips said “It’s a hurting world out there; we want to wrap our arms around them and love them.” And put on a good show of course! Phillips said that they hope to “do what Christ did, it’s a mission of love,” without getting “preachy or weird.”
Not only are these guys incredibly talented musicians, they are also wonderful role models for our children.
Phillips reminded us that “every artist is preaching something, whether it is sex drugs and rock and roll.” He went on to say that “we just want to be who we are, that’s not what we are into. We are into something greater than ourselves.” What an amazing concept to introduce to our children.
I believe that Christian music is a great avenue to introduce people to the ideas of Christianity, especially when it comes to children and young adults. Music is something that the whole family can enjoy together. It is a fun, informal approach to the ideas and beliefs of the faith. When asked what the best part of being a Christian artist was, Phillips said that “being a Christian artist is freeing. I am called to spread God’s word, not be something I’m not. It’s not to get crazy, or weird, or point a finger, there is too much of that. It is to present to you in a worldly, intelligent manner the Christian faith.”
Phillips urges young people to seek God out for themselves. “If you are not sure, take ten minutes of time to ask God to reveal himself to you, He will every time.” He reminds us that “God is not some alien” and that “He is worth knowing.”
Last night’s show was absolutely brilliant. The weather was gorgeous and the bands performed stunningly. If you have been looking for tasteful and appropriate music alternatives for your family, I encourage you to check out local Christian radio stations like 95.1 Shine FM.
With so many negative influences in the world around us, it is nice to know that our children have people like the Newsboys and the Afters to look up to.
