Tennessee Titans wide receiver OJ Murdock was found dead this morning outside a Tampa, Florida area high school from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Tampa police said 25-year-old Orenthal James (O.J.) Murdock was found in his car around 7:30 a.m. CDT in front of Middleton High School with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he died at 9:43 a.m.
Murdock had been excused from the first two days of training camp for personal reasons, but was expected to report today to begin camp.
The Titans signed Murdock as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2011 season, but he was placed on injured reserve for the entire 2011 season after an Achilles injury in training camp.
Murdock graduated from Tampa’s Middleton High School in 2005, which is the same school where he was found this morning.
The Titans issued the following statement concerning Murdock.
“We are shocked and saddened to hear of O.J. Murdock’s death this morning. In his brief time here, a number of our players, coaches and staff had grown close to O.J., and this is a difficult time for them. He spent the last year battling back from an Achilles injury as he prepared for this year’s training camp. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as they try to cope with this tragedy.”
