As the first week of the preseason comes to a close, there are a lot fantasy story-lines that could affect your team going into the regular season. Here are the top fantasy headlines from week 1 of the NFL preseason
1. Peyton Manning makes Broncos debut– Manning showed he was a little rusty during his brief appearance against the Bears. Manning went 4 for 7 for 44 yards and a pick. After his first pass was deflected by Lance Briggs, Manning impressively marched the Broncos down field before being picked off on another deflection at the 2 yard line. Manning showed he still has the arm to be a top quarterback in the league, but it may take him a few more games to get his game legs back. Manning should be up to speed for fantasy owners before the start of the regular season.
2. Dolphins release Chad Johnson- The man formerly known as “Ochocinco” had a pretty bad week. First, Johnson was arrested for domestic violence for allegedly head-butting his wife and then he was out of a job. Dolphins coach Joe Philbin decided to release Johnson the day after his arrest. Of course Chad wasn’t going to be a big fantasy threat, but any owner who drafted him in the later rounds of their drafts are probably kicking themselves right about now. It also makes all three Dolphins quarterbacks much less attractive from a fantasy stand point. Owners should stay away from Johnson until he gets his life together.
3. Adrian Peterson comes of the PUP list– Peterson surprisingly came off the physically unable to perform list (PUP) on Sunday. Peterson was not expected to return until at least September, but his recovery has been sped up and he is already participating in full pads during practice. This is great news for owners who took a chance on A.P. in their fantasy draft
4. RGIII and Andrew Luck have solid starts- Both rookie quarterbacks proved why they were the top two picks in April’s draft. Griffin went 4 for 6 for 70 yards and a touchdown during his debut. Griffin only played 14 plays, but showed he has an NFL quality arm by completing his final three passes for 58 yards. Luck played much longer than RGIII and had a perfect start to his Colts career. On his first play from scrimmage Luck threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to running back Donald Brown. Yes, Brown did do the majority of the work, but that has to be a good sign for both Colts fans and fantasy owners. Luck finished 10 for 16 for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Fantasy owners who took a chance on Luck and Griffin are probably really happy this week.
