‘Journey’ is not only the debut album from Brooklyn based gospel group T.R.U. Praise, but aptly describes their ministry. The group has seen many changes since forming in 2006 and continue to evolve into what God has called them to be. The ‘TRU’ stands for ‘through righteous uplifting’, declaring that whatever they do they desire to glorify God.
The album ‘Journey’ debuted back in April 2012 and peaked as high as #6 on the iTunes charts. On Saturday, August 25, 2012, T.R.U. Praise had their first live studio recording at Complete Music Studios in Brooklyn. The event was well attended, fueled by ticket giveaways through fan contests on Twitter and Facebook. The energy from the crowd for the night was anticipated to be high, however T.R.U. Praise leader Marcus ‘biguncletru’ Pass urged all to “please do NOT stand during the recording.”
A small question and answer session kicked off the night discussing the debut album. A recurring positive response was that the lyrics to each song were meaningful and contained substance. Oftentimes artists have amazing music on their CD’s, but no substance is there to hold you after the music stops. The versatility of the band and singers was also highlighted, offering different genres to present Christ.
A true testament and picture of the kingdom of God. He is not defined just by one sound, genre, or nationality. Marcus shared a few benchmarks of the recording process and points where God truly showed his favor upon the project. Marcus vowed that the next cd ‘will not be another six years before it comes out’, but they shall take time to assess ‘Journey’ and release the second CD in about a year or year and a half.
The first real T.R.U. Praise anthem, ‘I Choose Christ’ opened up the recording. The live energy that is T.R.U. Praise was felt as soon as the track started. As everyone seated joined in the hand movements to decalre “I choose life, oh oh, I choose Christ”. A Latin praise detour was taken next with the horn infused ‘All the time’ track. The last song on ‘Journey’ is one near to Marcus’ heart ‘Calling’, birthed out of a traumatic life experience.
T.R.U. Praise ministered ‘Calling’ with such an anointing, the atmosphere had a definite shift to one of pure worship. Marcus encouraged all in attendance that it was not too late, they could change right where they were and God would hear them.
“Today He’s calling you to change your way, so don’t delay. He needs you”
The quintessential rock song ‘Fix my heart’ was next, a song all need to experience live. The arrangements and added sections to the song were amazing, all while a steady heart beat played in the background. T.R.U. Praise’s second anthem closed out the night, ‘Glad’. A testimony all believers can identify with, despite all the issues we face in this earthly life.
“I am so GLAD that I’m SAVED, GLAD that I’m SAVED. AMEN!”
The recording was definitely a success, a midst the usual obstacles attributed to a live event. Marcus reflected on the night, saying, “It meant a lot to be able to showcase to a nice size audience what God has given us to share with the world. I feel God is truly perfecting our craft and making it exactly what He wants it to be.”
The world at large truly awaits to see the next phase of the T.R.U. Praise journey
