On June 6, 2012 Fox 2 News Detroit broke a story on “Rapper Calicoe brags about animal fighting in video, then says it’s not true” In the report online he is quoted:‘He says he is a battle rapper and this video is all about image. Rappers talk about all kinds of things that they never do. He says these animals don’t belong to him, they belong to a friend of his who is an animal lover and that these animals are not used for fighting in any way. He says they are well cared for.’
A follow-up story on June 12 interviews MHS Investigator Mark Ramos. Building up a case with charges that would stick was their utmost concern. No additional information on the condition of the pit bulls rescued is available other than that they are being cared for at the Michigan Humane Society – Detroit.
A dog is a privilege
Look at the pet dog in your home and at those that line shelter kennels. Watch the Fox 2 video again. These young pups are bound for bloody glory in some dog fighting ring. We are the ones that can make dogs torn victims of our greed and cruelty, or leave them weather-worn and lonely chained up in yards. On a lesser charge we take pets into our lives without the foresight of what the pet needs; to not just eat, drink and sleep. People can be negligent in meeting their dog’s needs for companionship and connection. Some may have a pet for the sake of having a pet – a possession.
What is the difference between you and smack talking Rapper Calicoe?
An upstanding citizen with common sense understands that if you hold the expectation that your pet will behave poorly, do not be surprised when they display behavior that you find unacceptable or ‘bad’. Expectations and beliefs are reflected in reality. People cannot be ignorant to their role and responsibility in the success or failure of their pets. So to that end, a responsible person will provide regular vet visits, spay or neuter the dog, and engage in training and socializing so the dog knows how to thrive with their human family. These practices apply to any breed or mix of breed regardless of their prior state in life – from a puppy mill, from a shelter or from the street.
When you have reputation-conscious people such as Calicoe and Michael Vick, a prize fighting pit bull is a status symbol that hasn’t yet been surpassed. If you throw in a few cock fighting roosters and an alligator you are, in their twisted reality, a bad-ass battle rapper. All breeds of dogs are created by men, therefore any breed-specific trait or ability is the result of artificial selection. Why have we allowed such an intelligent and loyal breed of dog such as the pit bull to be warped and battered in the name of money, power and influence? The pit bull along with a growing list of other dog breeds are under attack from breed specific legislation (BSL) that would have them not exists at all. The culture of death that boils up from these underground activities coupled with pit bull-centered media coverage will be the nail in this breed’s coffin if education and responsible ownership doesn’t stop it.
Stand up for your corner of the world
Open your eyes to living conditions for dogs in your own neighborhood, report dogs chained up and neglected in yards, report and follow up on dog fighting and gang activity in your neighborhood; be the eyes and ears for the authorities. Take back your yard and your block. Take your state representatives to task for creating and passing meaningful legislation that will remedy animal cruelty with significant penalties. Be an example for youth so they don’t grow up accepting people like Calicoe as the norm.
