When it comes to getting dressed and building a wardrobe, what we wear underneath is equally, if not more important that what we wear on top. To that point, putting on any bra just won’t do. A well-fit bra is essential for shirts, dresses and suit jackets to fit properly. Simply put, what you wear underneath can play a part in making or breaking your total look.
If you happen to be reading this and wondering if your bra really is the correct size – you no longer have to be a part of the 85% of women who aren’t. Liz Smith, the National spokesperson of Wacoal knows everything there is to know about proper fitting bras and answered a few of my questions regarding everything from the fit of a bra to new releases from the Fall 2012 collection.
Naima Turner: There are some women who have never had a proper bra fitting and may simply try on several pair without the help of a professional while bra shopping. How would you convince them that getting fit for a bra can change their lives?
Liz Smith: A great bra can make you look younger ,thinner, feel more confident and I can show a women that in about 15 minutes. It really is a simple process and makes a big difference in how you look and feel.
Naima Turner: How often should a woman have a bra fitting?
Liz Smith: At least once a year or if she has gained or lost 5 – 7 lbs.
Naima Turner: For women who have annoying bra straps that fall down, what solutions or tips can you offer to prevent that from happening?
Liz Smith: Definitely get fit to make sure the size is correct, then try a style that has kicked in straps to help those of us with narrow shoulders.
Naima Turner: Sometimes underwire bras can feel a bit uncomfortable, but are necessary for women who need more support. Does Wacoal offer an alternative to uncomfortable underwire bras?
Liz Smith: Underwires should never be uncomfortable., that usually occurs when you are wearing the wrong sized bra. That being said, we do offer non wire bras that offer terrific support and shaping as well.
Naima Turner: Fact or myth – All women can wear strapless bras, regardless of her bust size.
Liz Smith: Fact as long as she is wearing a bra in her correct size. Again we go back to that issue of being fit.
Naima Turner: When it comes to water weight or the different stages of pregnancy, how should a woman go about shopping to accommodate those body changes?
Liz Smith: When expecting your body changes over nine months and your breast tissue will need significant support to keep sagging to a minimum, therefore we suggest getting fit at the end of the first trimester, mid second trimester and shortly before the baby is born. Monthly water weight can be accommodated by going to a loser hook on your bra depending on how much of a change we are talking about. Some women find they need to change bra styles to achieve comfort due to water weight.
Naima Turner: Let’s talk about workouts and exercising. How important is it to have a bra that properly supports and fits when working out?
Liz Smith: A sports bra is very important if you move at all. Even for Pilates, Yoga, golf, or gardening one should wear a sports bra. It is very important to protect the breast tissue from the impact of any workout.
Naima Turner: What are some new exciting styles and shapes that you’ve included within your new Fall 2012 collection?
Liz Smith: Great colors and new textures are all part of the new fall line. We have exciting new t shirt bras, great additions to our iPant and Control freak collections and exquisite laces and embroideries for the modern women.
