Last night in Longmont, Colorado, at the Boulder County Fairgrounds, boxing fans were treated to exciting undercard bouts that culminated with an excellent main event featuring local favorite Raul ‘El Chino’ Carrillo (10-1, 6KO’s) who handled Albuquerque, New Mexico, prospect Josh ‘Pitbull’ Torres (7-2-1, 4 KO’s) in a close, hard fought six round bout.
The El Muneco, Raul Utajara, and Ghost Town Promotions card paid tribute to recently passed boxing hero Johnny Tapia, with many fans of ‘Pitbull’ Torres and the Tapia family making the trip from New Mexico in attendance.
Notable ringside celebrities included 1988 Olympic Light heavyweight Gold Medalist Andrew Maynard, former WBC light welterweight champion ‘Lightning’ Lonnie Smith (45-6-2, 27 KO’s), as well as former WBC/USNBC light welterweight champion Rob ‘Red Hot’ Frankel (30-12-1, 6 KO’s).
Referees Stephen Blea and Shel Gottshall had their hands full, but did an excellent job of keeping the action clean.
There was only one bout that could question the judges’ decision when Ronnie Reams was awarded a split decision victory over Daniel Calzada that warranted a loud chorus of boos echoing throughout the facility.
To his credit Calzada congratulated and shook the hand of Reams, him knowing in his heart (as did the fans) victory should have been his.
The Officials rarely get the respect they deserve and last night Chief Inspector Curtis Thrasher, Timekeeper Carmen Beall, Inspectors James Najera (blue) and Dennis Romero (red), Colorado State Boxing Commissioners William Artist, Jef Campos, Nolbert Chavez and Elaine D’Amato and Ringside Physician Dr. Alex Constantinides, all did a wonderful job.
Judges Ed Kugler, Tyrone Short, and Steve Waldman did a good job overall, Kugler maybe seeing things slightly different than many in attendance specifically during the Allen Medina/John Montgomery bout, Kugler declaring Medina the winner even though him being knocked down twice in the first round.
Raul ‘El Chino’ Carrillo won a close unanimous decision that was slightly marred when following the reading of the scorecards Josh ‘Pitbull’ Torres refused to shake the hand of Carrillo, a member of ‘Team Pitbull’ then screaming “We won 5 rounds of this fight”, that case of bad sportsmanship slightly tainting what was an otherwise good competitive evening of boxing.
There was no disturbance anywhere other than the ring, security active and visible for what was a good solid evening of pro boxing in Longmont, Colorado.
