What happened here? A Massachusetts dad shoots himself and his two children killing one of them over the weekend. The Associated Press reported that, “A man who had recently separated from his wife shot his two children, killing his 7-year-old daughter, before committing suicide, prosecutors said.
“A family member called police Saturday night after finding the bodies of 41-year-old Daryl Benway and his daughter, Abigail, in the master bedroom of their two-story Oxford home, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said.”
Benway’s 9-year-old son, Owen, was found shot in the head in the kitchen and was taken to UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center in serious condition. Owen has been in pediatric intensive care, a spokesman for Early said Sunday. He said he had no additional information about Owen Benway’s condition, and a hospital spokeswoman would not comment.” (Full Story http://entertainment.verizon.com/news/read.php?ps=931&rip_id=%3CDA0AL9RG…)
Ask yourself this, “Has the world gone mad?” Is losing your job and being separated from your wife and kids a reason to kill yourself and murder your children? Have we forgotten that life is precious and that we can get “help” to overcome adversity?
As a clinical psychologist, I can tell you that people do not just snap immediately. Mental illness build’s within someone over time. Obsessions can become reality over time.
Were there symptoms of irrational behavior by Mr. Benway prior to him committing murder? I bet the answer to this question is “yes”!
I am not trying to point fingers at anyone. I am trying to make society aware that we often can see signs of irrational behavior in people before they take action! So, keep your eyes and ears open!
