It’s been hard to watch Stila’s ups and downs over the past decade – between Estee Lauder picking it up from founder Jeanine Lobell, then brief ownership by Sun Capital, and then acquisition by Patriarch Partners, Stila’s become makeup’s little engine that could; or at least its fans hope it can and will.
While Stila struggles to get a grip on who it is or wants to be (yes, Stila skin care, a first-time move for the brand, is due to launch January 2013), at least one thing thankfully remains: Convertible Color cream blush/lipstick-in-one.
Convertible Color, which has been an In Style mag Best Beauty Buy for seven years running, works easily on both lips and cheeks to create a natural look. The color is more translucent, so there isn’t a huge amount of blending needed to avoid clown-like streaks of color on cheeks, which is usually where most 2-in1 cheek/lip creams go wrong.
On lips, Convertible Color provides a soft hit of color. Again, it’s a natural, and obviously monochromatic look so if you’re used to a more made-up look, wearing Convertible Color will feel like something’s missing at first.
For on the go, or air travel, Convertible Color is hard to beat. It’s compact, easy-to-apply, and it has pretty good staying power – though, if you’re travelling by air, or in harsher weather conditions like the recent heatwave, Convertible Color is not super-moisturizing, so make sure you’ve got on a coat of lip balm or primer first to help keep lips from drying out.
Stila Convertible Color comes in nine shades: Gerbera, Gladiola, Lillium, Petunia, Peony, Camellia, Rose, Fuchsia (which they spell incorrectly on the Stila website :( ) and Poppy. Unfortunately, a few shades were sold out on Stila’s website at press time, and Sephora.com only carries seven of the shades (no Gerbera or Rose). But Convertible Color is also available in stores at Sephora, Nordstrom and Macy’s, so it’s worth it to stop by their counters – all of which can be found at Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ.
Convertible Color comes in a .15 oz. compact, $25.
