FT. MILL, SC – The Chicago White Sox sent lefty Hector Santiago to the Charlotte Knights, the team’s class-AAA affiliate, in order to make room for recently acquired southpaw Francisco Liriano.
The 24-year old Santiago was the Sox 30th round pick the 2006 amateur draft and this year was 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA and four saves in 32 games. He fanned 43 in 39.1 innings.
Liriano, 28, was 3-10 for the Twins with a 5.31 ERA in 22 games and is slated to make his White Sox debut tomorrow when he faces off against his old team and Nick Blackburn (4-6, 7.99) at Target Field. He will wear uniform number 58.
DIAMOND DUST: Chicago purchased the contract of infielder Rey Olmedo from Class AAA Charlotte yesterday. He will wear uniform number 66. The White Sox had an opening on their 40-man roster so they did not have to make a corresponding move. The 31-year old was hitting .273 with 19 RBI in 80 games and the switch-hitter has played at third, short, second and the outfield field this season.
