Are you tired beyond belief and your coffee is just not working for you anymore? If you read pt. 1 article of “Why am I so tired?” You should by now have an understanding of adrenal fatigue. If you suspect adrenal fatigue could be the cause of your low energy, here are some natural solutions you can do to take immediate control of your energy.
Cut the heavy caffeine: Drinking excessive amounts of coffee, cola’s, energy drinks and taking high stimulant pills will only deplete your adrenal glands even more and make you jittery, irritable and have blood sugar spikes.
Eat a blood sugar balancing diet: This would be a low glycemic diet; you can find information on the Internet about this diet if you Google “low glycemic.” It’s a low sugar diet with a glycemic index scale upon which carbohydrates are ranked. It’s not complicated at all and many people find they lose weight on this diet.
Eat veggies and high quality protein: Eating a high veggie and quality protein meal helps keep your blood sugar stable as well as helps repair your adrenal glands. High quality proteins would be freerange chicken or turkey, organic eggs, grassfed meats and low mercury fishes. Ideally you want to make your meals consist of 80% veggies and 20% protein according to Donna Gates author of “Body Ecology Diet,” because most people don’t have enough stomach acid to digest animal protein.
Become a grazer: Spread small meals out through the day ideally about 6 times a day starting with a protein breakfast such as eggs, protein smoothie or plain Greek yogurt with nuts. This will keep your energy level up and help you drop weight.
Go back to old fashion food basics: Meaning a time before processed foods and soda pops, which strips your body of minerals, drains your energy and over time make you look and feel older. Going back to old fashion basics and taking the time to prepare fresh, wholesome foods not only is better for your health but the act of cooking has been known to help decrease stress levels for many people.
No strenuous exercise: When under stress it’s likely you’ve put on some fat around your middle so it would make sense that strenuous exercise will burn your fat. Quite the opposite is true. When you do strenuous exercise such as running, weight lifting or bootcamp, your already stressed adrenal glands are working harder to give you energy by pumping out more cortisol and out of basic survival instinct, your body is holding onto the fat you’re trying to lose. In addition these exercises will just make you more exhausted. If you love your bootcamp classes that does not mean you have to stay away from them forever, just until your adrenal glands are strong again. Instead, opt for doing light workouts such as Pilates, yoga, tai chi, speed walking, swimming and light weights. These exercises are also great stress relievers, energizers and fat burners without the strain. Even pole dancing will work.
Herbs to support adrenal glands and energy
According to Dr. James Wilson on adrenalfatigue.org, these are the best herbs to support adrenal function and help promote energy without over-stimulating your adrenal glands.
Licorice Root: Best known for supporting adrenal function. This anti-stress herb is known to increase energy, endurance and vitality.
Ashwagandha Root: This is an ancient East Indian herb known for it’s therapeutic use dating back to at least 1,000 BC probably because of it’s direct beneficial effects on adrenal tissue.
Siberian Ginseng Root: Helps support and rejuvenate adrenal function, increase resistance to stress, normalize metabolism, and regulate neurotransmitters (which are important in modifying the stress response.) It counteracts mental fatigue and is know to increase and sustain energy levels, physical stamina and endurance. Siberian Ginseng also has antidepressant properties.
Maca: Recognized for centuries in Peru for its many health benefits, including its ability to increase stamina, energy and endurance, and improve the ability to withstand stress. It also helps normalize the body’s response to stress, modulate cortisol levels, reduce the exhaustion that follow a stressful event, and protect the body against negative effects of stress.
By following this simple plan you can reduce adrenal exhaustion and start working towards getting your energy back. Remember to follow a good stress relief plan and see your doctor if your stress and adrenal condition is out of control as this is not meant to replace proper medical care.
