If your curiosity was piqued the numerous times you walked the caves and barrel rooms of Napa Valley’s greatest winemakers, sipping and savoring from French or American oak barrels, and wondered ‘how in the world do they do this’ then Judd’s Hill Winery has the answer.
Judd’s Hill Winery just off Silverado Trail in the beautiful Napa Valley offers a ‘wine maker for the day’ experience. Step into the shoes of Judd Finkelstein (wine maker) and Kenn Vigoda (co-winemaker and super chemist) to experience the art of blending your very own Bordeaux-style wine.
There is much to say about the Judd’s Hill team. CIndy, Devin, Kenn, CJ and Judd all make there way with smiles to greet and escort you into their comfortable blending/tasting room.
For most folks, wine tasting, sniffing, swirling and identification can be quite intimidating. Similarly, the process of identifying notes, measuring, crafting, sharing and blending with a group of strangers can be a bit overwhelming.
But this day long blending camp is nothing but comfortable, informative, interesting and fun. After a few handshakes with Kenn (co-winemaker extraordinaire,) CJ (hospitality and events) and Devin (general manager) it is time to let the winemaking begin.
This is the opportunity to let your inner winemaker out. The day begins with one of the blending guides (Todd, CJ, Mike or Jay) giving a brief overview of the wines you will be working with and the blending process. Just their smile alone ease the nerves as the inner mad scientist and taster extraordinaire emerge. You sip, measure, sip again, rework your formula, sip and measure again until your desired blend is achieved.
Once the formula is set its off to the barrel room to extract your wine from the barrels, bottle and label it. This is a true hands on experience as you cork your bottle and create and apply your personalized label.
After your blending seminar its time to relax and enjoy the delicious wines Judd’s Hill is known for. The grape is the star and the moderate alcohol levels and subtle use of oak really allow the true flavors of the grape to shine through.
