Erotica books have been around for a long time, yet since Fifty Shades of Grey came on the scene in 2011, erotica is seeing a surge in popularity. So much so that publishers are jumping on the Fifty Shades train.
They are doing this by buying up rights of E. L. James clones, other self-publishers with a similar slant to their stories, and publishing them with the hopes of cashing in. I mean if one book can boost the sales of a major bookstore, why not?
Here are a few new authors cashing on the Fifty Shades bandwagon:
Fire After Dark, by Sadie Matthews, actually has this on the cover:
Did Fifty Shades of Grey leave you wanting more?’
Eighty Days Yellow by Vina Jackson also has a reference to Fifty Shades on its cover:
If you like Fifty Shades, you’ll love…
Both of these books also have similar Fifty Shades covers, which seems to be the norm. They are visualizing pleasing, and simple yet you are getting a sex-filled story.
So how much is Fifty Shades influencing the publishing world? Well a classic story has been reworked complete with the cover clone called Jane Eyre Laid Bare by Eve Sinclair and Charlotte Bronte. I am sure that lovers of classic literature heads have just exploded. Yes readers, this is one of those mash-ups except it is laced with erotica.
But that is not the only thing publishers are doing. They are now reprinting their old authors books to cash in even going so far as to put Fifty Shades in their advertising.
Case in point is Harlequin, who is definitely capitalizing on the Fifty Shades phenomenon by re-releasing one of their writers Megan Hart. This is how they are doing it:
If You Liked Fifty Shades of Grey…
You’ll fall in lust with Megan Hart’s tales of unbridled desire.
They are apparently not shy about riding on the coattails of a book that is so highly popular. The books in question are Switch, Tempted, and Deeper. Even the covers are reminiscent of Fifty Shades.
A book series I recommended in a previous article, Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty trilogy is another series that has been re-released, complete with a new book cover. Though this series is not an erotic love story, the publisher can see the opportunity to jump on the Fifty Shades bandwagon. Unfortunately, folks going into this series end up quite shocked by the material, expecting a similar story written by E. L. James. On Goodreads, you can see exactly what people think about this publisher pushing such a book on them.
Zane is an erotic urban author who has been writing for awhile and her first book, Addicted is being rereleased including with a Fifty Shades like book cover as well. Personally she is not an author I like, but with 14 books under her belt, she is doing fine on her own. Now the cover is probably the closest I’ve seen that embodies the Fifty Shades clones. In fact I know I’d pick it up, just because it is that tantalizing.
With more publisher more than likely to follow suit, will this actually make erotica a mainstream juggernaut or will it go back to being only a niche product?
What Fifty Shades of Grey has done is kick down the door, so much so that everywhere you look, even if you never read the book, you know somthing about. It has opened up dialogue amongst women, from gushing over the book to looking for similar books like it. Women who have never read erotica are now jumping on this genre and are hungry for more. Is it any wonder that publishers are jumping on this pushing out more clones? There is a need there and it will continue to grow, this hunger for steamy sex, and a compelling love story.
It is an amazing time for erotica and I for one hope it lasts.
