Yellow Bulbine (Bulbine frutescens) is a great addition to desert landscaping perennials, and is hardy in both Tucson and Green Valley.
Yellow Bulbine is a great choice for planting areas on the north side of your home; a spot that is typically hard to plant since the sun exposure in the summer is significantly more than winter.
A neat plant, Yellow Bulbine grows to about 2 feet tall and wide, with bright green leaves and slender stems. The yellow flowers appear in the winter, lasting until spring. It’s petite size makes it a good container plant.
Use Yellow Bulbine, or its cousin with orange flowers, in part shade, open shade or under the filtered shade of a mesquite or palo verde. Pair Yellow Bulbine with a bolder textured plant such as the Spider Agave or Candelilla.
